The National Food Institute
(NFI) is a non-profit and independent network organization of
the Ministry of Industry. It is tasked to support and foster
development of the food industry to boost its competitiveness
in the world markets. The institute carries out its mandates
by providing relevant services to food industry.
The National Food Institute (NFI) was established by the Thai
Governemtn in October 15, 1996 to address barriers limiting
the development of the food processing industry in Thailand,
particularly barriers affecting its competitiveness in the world
markets. Its goal is to promote and develoop the Thai Food Industry
to enhance its efficiency and global competitiveness. |

The National Food Institute, in collaboration with the
private and government sectors plays an important role in
effectively coordinating and supporting activities to make
Thailand the Kitchen of the world. To put this goal to reality,
the Institute has assumed active roles in promoting food
safety, business development, Research and Development and
Intelligence gathering.
I. Food Safety
The NFI helps in installing part of the team responsible
for " Food Safety Management " in Thailand. Working
in collaboration with Government Authorities including Ministry
of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Public Health
and Ministry of Industry, the team promotes food safety
and help entrepreneurs produce products of international
standards by providing the following services:
1.Consultancy services in the implementation of GMP / HACCP
/ ISO 9000 / ISO 14000 / ISO/IEC 17025 and Clean Technology
systems
2.Risk Assessment studies
3.Assistance in working out a traceability model system
4.Dissemination of analyzed and synthesized information
related to food safety regulatory laws and standards
5. Chemical and microbiological testing of food samples
to ensure that products destined for commercial distribution
are up to international regulatory requirements and standards
. ,
II. Business Development
To support and build capability in the entire food chain
( from supplier to consumer) NFI fosters cluster development
by creating a food distribution center that would match
market demands and supplies. It also works and carries out
strategies to make Thailand the supplier of safe and quality
raw food materials. To enhance the capacity of the Thai
food suppliers, on-time delivery planning and branding practices
are encouraged. Simultaneously, NFI facilitates information
sharing and linkage between food buyers and sellers through
its web-site at http://www.nfi.or.th/.
III. R & D
To promote and support food Research and Development,
NFI collaborates with relevant agencies including Research
Institutes and Universities to enhance innovation in food
production, processing, packaging and distribution to:
1. Create new value-added products that are acceptable and
salable in the world market
2. Produce products that are up to the world standard
V. Intelligence
To update and support pertinent government and
private food sectors with relevant and current food-related
intelligence, NFI selects, analyzes, synthesizes and disseminates
useful and up to date information. Information relevant to
decision making, marketing, trade negotiations, standards
setting and policy development include:
1. local and foreign regulatory developments with possible
impacts to Thai Food Industry
2. Pertinent scientific information
3. Information on consumers' preferences and world markets
4. local and international food production, costs, price,
import and export statistics
5. food situational analysis
6. food production and consumption trends
7. food market forecast

Our objectives express
the goals we aim to achieve which are to promote and develop
the Thai Food Industry to enhance its efficiency and global
competitiveness and to assist food industry put to reality its
vision of: |

as the world production hub of quality and safe food;
- upgrading the standard of Thai processed
food production and products to meet international standards;
and
- increasing the value of our food exports by adding value
to agricultural food products.

The department offers a wide range of chemical, microbiological
and physical testing services to food processing companies.
It also provides analytical support to help food producers comply
with the international quality and safety standards and assist
regulatory and other involved agencies with scientific data
gathering to resolve trade disputes and other related problems. |

The department provides
training, consultations and assist processors implement safety

The department actively
disseminates updated information focusing on food safety and
quality, food laws and regulations, research and development
and otehr issues pertinent to food industry development and

Problems and challenges faced by the food industry could run
from technical to political in nature. To handle these problems,
collaboration among the private, government and potential resource
persons is necessary. The department thus facilitates coordination
among the pertinent groups to expedite problem solving and foster
development in the food industry through concerted action and
policy research development. |
